The
Sierra Nevada Mountain Range runs though
California and parts of Nevada. When the
first European settlers arrived in the
area the Sierras (as the range is sometimes
called) posed quite an obstacle, and many
groups come close to getting horribly
lost. During the 1850s the Sierra Nevada
Mountains were thick with prospectors
looking for gold, and this brought people
by the trainload into the area. This in
turn helped cities like San Francisco
and Los Angeles get their start. Strangely
enough the Sierra’s weren’t
truly mapped until about 1900, by which
time people had been passing though them
for more than 50 years.
Today the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range
is an excellent place to drive though,
with many winding roads that have fantastic
vistas. The mountains cause something
called a “rain shadow”, which
means that all of the moist air coming
from the ocean is dumped before it gets
over the range. This causes terrain features
like Death Valley, which has very little
rain. There is also a local effect called
“Sierra Nevada Rotor”, where
air large circular tube of air begins
to roll on the southeast side of the peaks.
This air pushes aircraft up like a kyte,
abd planes can go a lot higer then usual
by using this strage air current.
