California
is known to many as the home of deserts,
like places such as Death Valley. This
is true, mostly because of the weather
patterns caused by large geological formations.
Many parts of California are very lush,
and no plant is the living embodiment
of the word “verdant” like
the California Redwood. The Redwood is
a large tree by most people’s standards;
they are an old growth plant taking the
better part of a human lifetime to mature.
The most famous Redwoods are the Giant
Sequoias that grow to be over 350 feet
tall. Such massive trees are usually about
600 years old, and can live to be over
2000 years old. You can see how cutting
such a tree down is a tragedy, as it is
likely that we will never see the growth
of such forest leviathans ever again.
Whether big, medium, or small it is important
that California conserve its forest heritage
for future generations.

One
of the places one can see such trees is
at Redwood National and State Park. This
is not one single park but a network of
protected areas operated at both the national
and state level. Each park is an ancient
coastal Redwood ecosystem preserved by
law. Everything in the park is protected,
which is necessary if the voracious logging
industry is to be held at bay. Many people
come to the parks every year to marvel
at the natural beauty, the power, and
the arboreal majesty of these fantastic
trees.
