Located
in Utah, Arches National Park was named
after… well, arches. Situated near
a place called Moab, the park is full
of these weird stone arches. There are
over two thousand of these freaky things
in the park, and they are a sight indeed.
In the old “Road Runner” cartoons
you would see the bird and the coyote
running through these remote desert locations
with these weird balancing rocks and ludicrously
steep cliffs. There were pillars and arch
formations and all sorts of things for
a coyote tied to a rocket could slam into.
The funny thing is those weren’t
complete exaggerations, and those strange
balancing rocks do exist in Arches National
Park.

Some
of the arches look so delicate that they
might fall down with the slightest puff
of wind. These strange geologic formations
were caused when erosion took away the
soft bits of soil and left the hard bits
to stand on their own. Since the park
is located in a desert most of the recent
erosion was caused by wind. It certainly
wasn’t the big horned sheep.
