Located
in the middle of the eastern half of the
United States of America, Tennessee is
a slab-shaped state that is named after
the Cherokee word “Tanase”,
a word that has been said to mean something
between "meeting place" and
"winding river". By taking the
north and south borders of North Carolina
and extending them to the Mississippi
River, the original surveyors created
the state lines of what would become modern
day Tennessee. Tennessee was one of the
infamous “slave states” and
eventually ceded from the Union, only
to be readmitted after the southern Confederates
lost the war. In fact Tennessee was the
first state readmitted to the union, and
the subject is still a little sore in
many a conversation.
Tennessee is famous for two of its cities:
Memphis is famous for Blues Music, is
where Elvis’s “Graceland”
is located, and is Tennessee’s largest
city. The other city is Nashville, and
it is the center of the Country And Western
Music in America. Avoided by some and
worshiped by others, Nashville is visited
by many a music fan. Both of these cities
give Tennessee a very musical history
and show how the state has contributed
to America’s culture.
