Located
in the south east of the country, South
Carolina was one of the thirteen colonies
that rebelled against British rule. South
Carolina was one of the infamous “slave
states”; unlike its northern neighbour
North Carolina, South Carolina was the
first state to succeed from the union.
It hosted some of the first and bloodiest
battles of the war, including the battle
at Fort Sumter. History and tradition
state that it was at Fort Sumter that
the first shots of the Civil War were
fired and where first blood was drawn.
Of course South Carolina had no idea how
many of its sons it would lose in the
terrible conflict.
Today South Carolina is home to Highway
95, the highway that hoards of Canadians
take every year when they want to go to
places like Panama City Beach. These tourists
also flock to Myrtle Beach, as the white
sands are very inviting to anyone who
has just seen four months of winter. Knowing
South Carolina’s history it probably
isn’t surprising that cotton grows
there in large amounts, and is still harvested
to this day.
