Known
to this day as the “Gateway To The
West”, Missouri has had Europeans
in it since the 1650s. The state wouldn’t
see significant numbers of the “pale
face” until the 1800s though and
as the railroads began to creep from East
to West Missouri became a stop off point
for people who would launch themselves
into the wilderness of the west. Moving
in great wagon trains they would head
to places like Texas, Colorado, and California.
Missouri became a “last bastion”
of civilization, and many people who left
would never be seen again.
When the Civil War came Missouri was split
into two parts, and the idea of slavery
was hotly contested in the state. Missouri
is connected to states like Mississippi,
which were devoutly on the Confederate
side, yet in the north of the state there
were connections the liberal north. This
made Missouri a battleground, and the
state paid dearly for both its geographic
location and its political situation,
supplying troops to both sides.

Today
Missouri is a growing state, but like
everywhere in North America is not without
the common problems of urbanization. Missouri
is an excellent place to visit, with ample
historical sites, war museums, and galleries
of many a shape and size.
