This
state’s name is a right of passage
for any child entering a spelling contest.
Located in the south east of the United
States of America, Mississippi is right
beside Alabama. Geographically one of
America’s “low lands”,
Mississippi is made up of the Mississippi
River Floodplain and the Gulf Coastal
Plain. This makes Mississippi a moist
place to live, and is known for its fertile
soil. There are many lakes in the state,
and while not as “lake filled”
as places like Michigan or Minnesota,
Mississippi is far from being a desert.
Of course no mention of Mississippi would
be complete without mention of The Mississippi
River, which deserves more then a passing
mention due to the fact that it is one
of the largest and important rivers in
the world.

One
of the first states to succeed from the
Union in the 1800s, Mississippi paid dearly
in men and materials during the war that
soon followed. People from Mississippi
are proud of their history. Mississippi
is known for getting hit by hurricanes
that come off of the Gulf of Mexico, and
people from Mississippi have been forced
to make quick migrations (along with people
from neighbouring states) to get out of
the way of a particularly power storm.
One interesting thing about Mississippi
is that it was where Elvis was born. The
house in Tupelo where Elvis stayed until
he was 13 years old is still preserved
as a museum. Recently a statue of “Child
Elvis” was erected at the site.
