One
of the smallest states in the United States
of America, Maryland is located on the
east coast and has a proportionately large
amount of area touching the Atlantic Ocean.
Named after Henrietta Maria (Queen Consort
of Charles I), Maryland was at one time
one of the key destinations of tens of
thousands of British convicts. Britain
had a way of emptying out its slums by
imprisoning people for one reason or another.
When the prisons got too full they would
be shipped off to places like America,
Australia, or various parts of Africa.
Many of these people wanted religious
freedom, and Maryland Toleration Act was
a very attractive thing to these dispossessed
people. Many people in Maryland can trace
their origins back to these original “settlers”.

Maryland
is home to places like Chesapeake Bay,
which is the largest estuary in the United
States. It isn’t surprising that
Maryland’s history lies in contact
with the sea, and Chesapeake Bay was the
site of the Battle of the Chesapeake in
1781, during which the French fleet defeated
the Royal Navy, allowing the United States
to become independent. Chesapeake Bay
is also the site of the Chesapeake Bay
impact crater, which occurred some 35
million years ago. Caused by some sort
of meteor, this crater gave the bay its
size and shape.
