What
do most people think of when they think
of Kentucky? OK, they think of a certain
old guy in a white goatee that fired a
whole lot of chicken and then formed a
small “restaurant” chain that
exploded into one of the leading killers
of wrestling fans all over North America.
While the name of this fast food joint
is famous, its connection with Kentucky
is tenuous at best. The real Kentucky
is about… well more or less whatever
any state is about. There’s fairs,
horse races, a civil war museum, horse
races, art galleries, concerts, horse
races…
All right, one can’t talk about
Kentucky without mentioning the breeding,
racing, training, racing, feeding, and
racing of the finest speed-breasts in
the country and perhaps the world. The
Kentucky Derby is one of the most celebrated
thoroughbred races in all of history.
The diligent and insightful Hunter S.
Thompson covered the event, along with
his trusted and highly talented visual-correspondent
Ralph Stedman. Perhaps the two of them
were more interested in the two legged
beasts then the four legged ones, but
one way or another the Kentucky Derby
provides a huge draw to the state and
a reason to spend billions on horses.
