Like Hawaii, Alaska is one of only two
states in the United States of America
that isn’t attached to its mainland
country. Located on the top left hand
corner of the North American continent,
Alaska is attached “Papoose Style”
to the country known as Canada. In fact
to get to Alaska Americans either have
to cruise up the coast of the Province
of British Columbia or go though mainland
Canada. This odd geographical arrangement
is the result of the United States purchasing
the territory from Russia in 1867. Most
people thought this was a bad move, but
when gold started popping out of the ground
the American populous changed its mind
(and many subsequently froze to death).
Alaska is thought to be the place where
ancient humans first migrated to North
America. The theory is that when the last
Ice Age came about the water levels shrank
back to reveal a land bridge over the
Bearing Straight. A curious path led though
the ice all the way into the heart of
the content, and animals wandered thought
in search of food. Humans followed the
animals and set up shop. When the Ice
Age ended the bridge disappeared, once
again separating the two continents once
again.

Modern
Alaska can get quite cold, but even so
many people living there are proud to
call Alaska their home. Alaska has a population
of over 620 thousand, with the largest
city in the state being Anchorage. Anchorage
has about 90 thousand people, which is
small compared to places like Los Angeles
but large compared to many other Arctic
cities.
