Bethesda
Fountain is a statue located on the
lower level of Bethesda Terrace in
Central Park, New York. Originally
designed by Emma Stebbins in 1868,
it was unveiled in 1873. Stebbins
was the first woman to receive a commission
for a major work of art in New York
City. The bronze, 8 foot statue depicts
a winged angel touching down upon
the top of the fountain, where water
sprouts and cascades down the rest.
Beneath her are four 4 foot cherubs
representing Temperance, Purity, Health,
and Peace.
