Every
great military has a military collage.
France is no exception. With literally
hundreds of years of experience teaching
students the Ecole Militaire has been
a leader in military education for much
of its history.
The Military Academy consists of a central
pavilion with two wings added under the
Second Empire, as well as a courtyard
of honor. Inside is the chapel decorated
by Vien and the salle des Maréchaux,
decorated in a Louis XV style. Founded
by Louis XV in 1751, with the help of
Madame de Pompadour and the financier
Duverney, its objective was to make poor
gentlemen into military men.
Today, the institutions housed within
are some of the greatest schools in France
(the equivalent of Ivy League schools
in the U.S.). It is said that Napoléon
Bonaparte himself passed through this
school, obtaining excellent grades, in
his early years.
