Sometimes known as “New York, New
York”, New York City is home to
the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the
Empire State Building, and a lot of surly
American citizens. The metropolitan area
of New York City contains about twenty
one million people, while the “inner
city” contains about eight million
people. New York City is the second largest
city in the world, right behind Tokyo.
Tokyo claims to have about over thirty
four million people, so New York City
has a bit to grow if it wants to get the
title.
New York City is of course known for its
forests of skyscrapers, but most of its
buildings are not that tall. New York
City is made up of five “boroughs”;
they are Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan,
Queens, and Staten Island. New York City’s
gross metropolitan product was estimated
to be $480 billion American Dollars. That
means that if the city were a nation it
would have the 16th highest gross domestic
product in the world!

It’s
hard to imagine that New York City started
out as a small Dutch settlement called
“New Amsterdam”. Located on
the southern tip of the island in the
1620s, this flyspeck would grow until
it took over everything. New York City
would see some serious times, including
the woes caused by the Civil War, two
World Wars, corruption by the Mafia, a
tide of urban crime, and the destruction
of the World Trade Center. New York City
is stronger then anyone could imagine,
and it would probably take a nuke to level
such a city.
