Constructed
at breakneck speed to take the title of
“world's tallest building”
away from the Chrysler Building, the Empire
State Building was officially opened on
May 1, 1931. It’s timing proved
to be less than fortunate, because the
Great Depression made sure that much of
the office space went unused until the
1940s. One of the many popular tourist
destinations in New York, the building
has a public observatory at its top, which
gives everyone the chance to see an impressive
view of the city. Floodlights illuminate
the top of the building at night in colors
chosen to match seasonal and other events.
Weighing in at approximately 330,000 metric
tonnes, the building has 73 elevators,
6,500 windows, and boasts 204,385 square
meters (2,200,000 square feet) worth of
office space. If you want to climb to
the top of the building you would need
to climb 1,860 steps!

The
Empire State building is world famous;
from its role in the 1933 film King Kong
to its use in the move Sleepless In Seattle,
the Empire State Building is an important
symbol in the American consciousness.
There was even an accident involving a
plane; on Saturday July 28, 1945, a B-25
Mitchell bomber accidentally crashed into
the north side between the 79th and 80th
floors! The accident killed 14 people
and it took 40 minutes to stop what might
have become a very tragic fire.
