                                         This
small city was formed around 1886; today
the city has been entirely engulfed by
the city of Los Angeles. It is impossible
to tell where Los Angeles starts and Santa
Monica stops, as the tow cities have blended
to form a seamless whole. The city has
                                        a 3-mi (4.8-km) oceanfront beach and is
centred along a long road called Santa
                                        Monica Boulevard. The Boulevard stretches
from Hollywood in the east to the ocean
in the south. Driving the length of Santa
Monica Boulevard is an excellent way to
see the city and get a feel for what it
is like to live in California.

                                        The
last part of Santa Monica Boulevard before
the ocean is Santa Monica Pier. The pier
is quite large, having enough room to
for a small amusement park and a public
aquarium. On weekends and before and after
work it is crammed with people swimming
in the ocean and enjoying the sunshine.
If the pier isn’t quite your thing
you can go inland just a few blocks to
the 3rd Street Promenade. The promenade
is a road that has been closed off to
the traffic and is an excellent place
to shop, go for a stole, and or get some
ice cream. Something like a combination
between a garden and strip mall, it is
filled with shops with all sorts of interesting
                                        things to buy.
