Once
one of the landmark Las Vegas hotels,
today the Sahara earns its name by being
on the dustier side of the Strip. Located
just down the road from the Stratosphere,
the Sahara hotel and casino can be marked
by its vintage sign and its replica onion
domes. Trying to capture the theme of
the “Arabian Nights”, the
hotel clashes its attractions with its
theme, and tops off the feeling with a
decaying water park on it’s south
side.
The Sahara offers the usual mix of gaming
and dining, along with a few attractions
that are worth checking out if you are
swinging by that area. The first is the
Rollercoaster, which allows the Sahara
to join a growing list of casinos that
have thrill park rides built right into
the casino. “Speed the Ride”
(as opposed to the other types of speed,
which are not necessarily openly offered
by casinos) is pricey at $10 a ride. If
you go to the Sahara’s web site
you can see an entire busload of Elvis
impersonators go on “Speed the Ride”,
which is worth seeing at least once.
Other
attractions at the Sahara include a “Cyber
Speedway”, which is essentially
a NASCAR simulator. The casino describes
it by claiming the following: “Car
racing fans can turn their high-speed
driving dreams into reality at the Cafe's
35,000-square foot Las Vegas Cyber Speedway.
Mounted on hydraulic bases, the Cyber
Speedway cars, 7/8 the actual size of
authentic stock cars, are equipped to
provide the most realistic simulated race
car driving experience available.”
At $10 a race, most people don’t
do it more than once.
