Like
many of the casinos on Fremont Street,
the Four Queens Hotel/Casino has some
serious history behind it. Established
in November of 1964, the hotel was tiny
in comparison to the Las Vegas monoliths
of today: 120 rooms and a casino of just
20,000 square feet (some casinos are now
nearing ten times that number). The owner
and builder of the casino, one Mr.Ben
Goffstein, dedicated the casino to his
four daughters. Most people think the
four queens is named after a really good
poker hand, but in fact it is named after
Faith, Hope, Benita and Michele Goffstein.
By 1976 the hotel had expanded to 33,000
square feet, and the new decor set the
interior-decorating trend for Las Vegas
casinos by replacing the typical gambling-house
red and black with warm earth tones. The
casino expanded again in 1977 to 40,000
square feet, taking up a full block of
Fremont Street from Casino Center to Third
Street. In 1981 the building expanded
yet again, adding an eighteen-story, 400-room
tower. There was also 8,000 more square
feet of casino space, bringing the total
to 50,000.
As
the years passed Fremont Street was almost
forgotten. Along with its neighbours,
places like the Plaza and Glitter Glitch,
the Four Queens fell into disfavour with
the mass public. While far from empty,
the hotel had seen better days. As the
small privately owned places were out
shown by the titans of The Strip, a new
idea was formed, and The Fremont Street
Experience was born. Now located under
the fantastic lighted canopy that covers
the entire street, the Four Queens is
back up and running: “The most dazzling
lights in the Heart of Las Vegas shine
at the electrifying Four Queens. Their
brilliance reflects the dynamic fun and
excitement that goes on 24-hours a day.
Here you can look forward to an exceptional
value and a royally good time.”
