Billing
itself as the “best city in Las
Vegas”, The New York – New
York is sculpted to look like a colorful
caricature of the New York skyline. Right
across the street from the MGM Grand,
the two casinos have a walkway between
the two that offers a fantastic view of
the city at night. From this bridge you
can see that the outside of the casino
is studded with miniature mock-ups of
famous New York landmarks, such as the
Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Add to this the fact that the building
is covered with video boards barking out
“coming attractions” makes
the entire edifice look like some strange
multi-storied Christmas tree.
Inside
the hotel is decorated in more or less
the same manor; like many of Las Vegas’s
theme casinos everything is tweaked so
it has the same theme as the hotel; there
are stores named things like “Grand
Central Watch Co.” and the feature
watering hole is called the “Big
Apple Bar”. It makes everything
feel like a huge version of East Side
Mario’s… with craps tables.
The hotel also provides such attractions
as “Coyote Ugly”: that is
“A southern style bar and dance
saloon featuring hot female bartenders
who have elevated pouring drinks to an
art form.” There is also the “Manhattan
Express”, letting New York –
New York join the growing list of casinos
that have roller coasters built into the
hotel. Of course all of this more or less
disappears when you hit the gaming floor,
which looks like every other gaming floor
on the strip. Why? Because Vegas is about
gaming, and this is a well supplied casino
for doing just that. Nothing to sneeze
at and definitely worth a look, the New
York – New York is a welcome addition
to the Las Vegas Strip.
