Once
Pharos was a major port having two huge
harbours, having being on the site of
Alexandria's ancient lighthouse. Parts
of the lighthouse can be seen in the construction
of the old fort. This is the famous lighthouse
was an astonishing 125m in height with
approximately three hundred rooms, and
was one of the Seven Wonders of The World.
The lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake
around 1100, and to this very day it remains
one of the most studies buildings in the
history of the world. The entrance is
through a gateway made of red Aswan granite.
It’s location is excellent for defending
the harbour, it is a natural place for
a fortress. Also located inside the fort
is the Naval Museum which contains artefacts
from the Roman and Napoleonic sea battles.
