The
gothic style Tribune Tower serves not
only as the Tribune Corporation’s
headquarters, but the jewel in its architectural
crown. Its builders selected by contest,
the Tribune Tower serves as a tourist
attraction for many of Chicago’s
visitors. When construction finished in
1925, this 462 foot (141 meters) skyscraper
made headlines as one of the tallest buildings
in the world. The tower comes alive at
night, and most agree that seeing it lit
from the bottom makes the building look
very imposing indeed.
At
the time that the tower was built correspondents
for the Chicago Tribune brought back rocks
and bricks from a variety of historically
important sites throughout the world.
These pieces were to be incorporated in
the building itself. They have been added
into the lowest levels of the building
and are labelled with their locations
of origin. Those who go to look will see
material from the Taj Mahal, Abraham Lincoln’s
Tomb, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin
Wall, and many others. Recently a piece
of rock brought back by astronauts from
the moon to be imbedded in the building.
