This
beautiful theatre was build was built
in 1927, and in its time was one of the
most popular theatres in the city. The
building has lived though some of the
busiest buildings eras in the cities history.
During the age when it was built open
concept or “atmospheric” theatres
were quite common. Over the years, as
theatres were replaced by television,
such theatres became rare, until the Runnymede
Theatre became one of only three theatres
still left in Canada. Soon the building
fell into repair, and even though it is
located in one of the most interesting
neighbourhoods, it closed its doors. During
the 1980’s it laid quiet until Chapters
Bookstore bought it and in 1998 opened
it up with its insiders in perfect condition.
The open-concept works perfectly well
for the rows and rows of books, and it
is quite a pleasant atmosphere indeed.
