During
the war of 1812 the city was raided
twice by Americans. As it grew in
size and began to slowly separate
from Britain it developed its own
autonomy. In 1832 it was renamed Toronto.
Toronto is a port of entry into Canada
and is an important commercial, financial,
and industrial hub as well as Canada's
banking and stock-exchange center
and chief wholesale-distribution point.
Ontario's wealth of raw materials
and hydroelectric power make Toronto
an industrial powerhouse. The city
and surrounding area produces more
than half of Canada's manufactured
goods. The city of Toronto has many
attractions: The city is home to the
Canadian National Exibition (known
locally as the CNE). Toronto is also
home to the monolithic CN Tower, the
world's tallest freestanding structure,
which reaches to a height of 1,815-ft
(553-m).
