One
of the fastest changing and growing
cities in North America, Toronto is
the largest city in Canada. Experiencing
enormous growth due to immigration,
over 10% of the city’s population
is ethnically Chinese. In 1998, the
cities surrounding an area known as
“Metropolitan Toronto”
were merged as “Mega-City Toronto”
(Toronto, York, East York, North York,
Etobicoke, and Scarborough), instantly
becoming the continent's fifth largest
city. Toronto got its start (like
many other North American cites) as
a fur trading post. There was a fort
built by the French in 1749, which
was destroyed in 1759. The British
purchased the site from the Native
Americans in 1787 and it became the
home of many American Loyalists. In
1793 it was chosen as the capital
of what was then known as “Upper
Canada”, and was later named
the city of “York”.
