Mimico
is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. It is bounded by Evans Avenue
to the north, Lake Ontario to the
south, Mimico Creek to the east, and
Dwight Avenue to the west. Its populace
and architecture range from upper-middle
to working class. The name Mimico
is derived from a Mississauga Indian
word meaning "Place of the Wild
Pigeons," perhaps referring to
passenger pigeons. The community near
where Dundas Street crossed Mimico
Creek was originally known as Mimico,
but by 1858 a Mimico post office had
been opened near the mouth of Mimico
Creek on Lake Ontario, a community
known as Mimico by the Lake. Thus,
the former Mimico adopted the name
Islington.
