The
Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica is an ecclesiastic
basilica in Ottawa, Canada. The first
plans for the cathedral date from 1839.
The building's structure was constructed
between 1841 and 1865. The cathedral was
dedicated to the Immaculate Conception
in 1853, and was elevated to the status
of basilica in 1879. A cathedral is a
Christian church building, specifically
of a denomination with an episcopal hierarchy
(such as the Roman Catholic Church or
the Lutheran or Anglican churches), which
serves as the central church of a bishopric.
As cathedrals are often particularly impressive
edifices, the term is sometimes also used
loosely as a designation for any large
important church. Some pre-reformation
cathedrals in Scotland now within the
Church of Scotland still retain the term
cathedral, despite the Church's Presbyterian
polity which does not have bishops.
