Kingston's
City Hall is located on the corner of
Ontario St. and Brock St. Constructed
in 1844, this attractive limestone building
has been designated a historic site. Elegant
in every detail, it has become symbol
of the city it was built to serve. Handsome
windows and attractively proportioned
dome make it one of the most picturesque
buildings in Kingston. Meticulously reconditioned
to retard the effects of harsh weather,
the building serves as a popular landmark
and stroll destination during the warm
months. The Kingston city hall was built
according to the plans of George Browne
in 1842-1844, when the town had just been
designated capital of Canada, and the
building was designed so that it could
serve such a lofty goal. Designed in a
somewhat severe neo-classical style, the
building underwent a number of modifications
in the following years. Some of the changes
were based on the plans of John Power,
including that of the dome rebuilt in
1908.
