Located
on a peninsula that allows for an easy
route between Asia and Europe, Turkey
is an exotic, highly cultured place. Acting
as a transit point and trade hub, Turkey
was once the center of a vast empire that
is now only a shadow of its former self.
While it is true that many great civilizations
were based in Turkey as far back as 9000
years ago, the truly great age of Turkey
happened when the city of Constantinople
(now modern day Istanbul) fell. What would
rise from the ashes of the Byzantine age
became known as the Ottoman Empire, and
would cover much of Europe. Rising to
power in the 13th Century the Ottoman
wars of conquest would rage for many years
and would only end with the approach of
modernity.

Turkey
is a place with cool wet winters and hot
and sticky summers. It is prone to earthquakes,
and the 20th century saw some real seismic
disasters occur within Turkey’s
borders. While perhaps not the safest
place in the world, Turkey is a must see
for any world traveler who wishes to call
themselves cultured. Things can be rough
in Turkey, and it has seen two military
coups in the past 50 years. As with many
places such as Turkey, it pays for a traveler
to be well informed before leaving on
a long trip through such a country.
