When
one thinks of Paradise one usually thinks
of a place like Tahiti. Part of a chain
of atoll islands called French Polynesia;
Tahiti is the largest island in French
Polynesia and the central gathering point
of its population. Tahiti has about 170
thousand people living in its borders,
and that means that about 70% of all over
the people living in French Polynesia
are living on Tahiti. Tahiti is part of
a group of Islands called the Society
Islands, and these Islands form a group
that makes up French Polynesia.
It’s a bit confusing, but think
of each island atoll or archipelago as
an individual country. French Polynesia
would be like a series of countries, and
each island or series of islands is like
a country to itself. Each of these islands
is so small that they usually don’t
have much on them, but they can still
have “capitals”. The capital
of Tahiti is called Papeete, and the city
has about 26 thousand people.

Tahiti
is a French “overseas country”,
which is sort of like a “protectorate”.
People who are born on Tahiti are considered
French Citizens, and can expect all of
the benefits of French Citizenship. French
Polynesia is not part of the European
Union though (as it is not in Europe)
and French Polynesia does not use the
Euro as currency, instead they use the
CFP Franc or “Colonies françaises
du Pacifique franc”.
The parts of Tahti that are not urbanized
are lush jungle, with spectacular trees,
waterfalls, and beaches. People who come
to Tahti often stay there so they can
explore some of the other islands. Many
of the local islands have not seen humans
for many years, if ever, and are the paragon
of unspoiled paradise… those that
haven’t been used for nulcear warhead
tests by the French of course.
