Spain
is a country with a lot of history. Settled
by various semi-nomadic peoples before
the time of Ancient Greece, they eventually
became known as Iberians. Since the area
was settled by so many different types
of people the country has many different
cultural groups within its borders. The
Carthaginians would arrive in the area
around 500 BCE, and eventually the Romans
would follow hundreds of years later.
As time passed the area that would come
to make modern Spain was invaded many
times. Invaders came from the north, the
east, and even the south. It wasn’t
until about the15th century that Spain
began to take shape, and it would become
one of the major power players in what
was eventually termed “Christendom”.
Between the 1500s and the 1800s Spain
was a major world power. It sent raiders
and war fleets of its own all over the
globe exploring the world and taking land
in the name of the Spanish Empire.

It
was ruled for a long time by very faithful
Catholic Monarchs who wanted to spread
their power, their wealth, and their religion
all over the world. South America and
many parts of North America suffered under
the hands of brutish destroyers, the Conquistadors,
and many native populations were either
wiped out or converted to Catholicism.
Spain was involved in many wars in Europe,
many of these wars dealing with conflicts
with Christians who were not Catholics
(a.k.a. Protestants). These wars eventually
removed Spain as a world power. The war
that is considered most responsible is
the war with the French, when Napoleon’s
armies took control of Spain in the early
1800s. Today Spain is a modern country
and a “First World Nation”.
Spain joined NATO in 1982 and became a
member of the European Union in 1986.
