Once
the home of proud tribes such as the Zulu,
this part of Africa has become to be known
as the “Republic of South Africa”
(referred to simply as South Africa):
this republic takes up the majority of
the southern tip of the continent of the
Continent of Africa. People have been
living in South Africa for tens of thousands
of years. Unfortunately for the natives
it was once of the first areas to be settled
and colonized by Europeans. The first
Europeans to arrive in South Africa were
“the Dutch”, meaning people
who came from the country of “Holland”,
today known as the Netherlands. The Dutch
arrived in the 1600s, and the British
soon followed them. The British made several
landings and it wasn’t too long
before the two giants came to blows, first
in Anglo-Dutch War and then in the two
wars called the Boer Wars.

As
the 20th century arrived South Africa
was one of the most segregated and racist
countries in the world. Those of European
decent held the power while those of native
African decent did not. This came from
a long tradition of exploitation and slavery.
While the country of South Africa gained
its independence when the British Empire
collapsed, those of African decent did
not gain their political freedom until
much later. This was became there was
a series of harsh laws called Apartheid,
and these laws soon made South Africa
South Africa a international pariah. These
laws were abolished in 1994, but the road
to recovery and equality is a long one
and total reform will take a lot longer.
While 80% of the people in South Africa
are of Aboriginal African decent they
do not hold a large degree of wealth,
although over time this is expected to
change.
