Niger
is a landlocked country in the “bulb”
of western Africa. The country is mostly
desert, with one river running though
its southern reaches. These deserts are
mostly wide expanses of intensely hot
sand dunes. Despite being so dry Niger
does have some greener areas that do have
some wild life, including lions, giraffe,
and elephant. This is mostly due to the
Niger River, which supplies the country
with its needed moisture.
Niger’s official language is French.
This is due to that fact that Niger was
a French Colony. People have been living
in Niger for a very long time, and evidence
can be found that the original Nigerians
were surviving in the area over 600000
years ago. Though out Niger’s history
the river has played an important part
in trade, transport, and agriculture.

Niger
gained its independence from France in
1958, and since then the political side
of Niger has been rough. Graft, revolution,
martial law, and public demonstrations
occurred until about 1990 when reforms
began to take place. There have been several
coups since then and one of Niger’s
presidents was assassinated, as well as
the military never being too far away
from taking control. The scene remains
perilous, but it is hoped that stability
will soon be on the horizon.
