Most people will know New Zealand as the
place where they filmed “Lord of
The Rings”. Not as many people know
where New Zealand is, or the fact that
it not located next to the United Kingdom.
New Zealand is in fact located “next
to” Australia, its eastern side
facing the vast expanse of the Pacific
Ocean. It is a fantastic island with excellent
and untouched wild spaces that invite
a visitor to explore a bit more.
Europeans discovered New Zealand, like
Australia, in the 1600s. When these settlers
arrived they found that the space was
already inhabited, yet undeterred went
about the business of making themselves
right at home. Of course the natives weren’t
as welcoming as some; the Maori peoples
who arrived before the Europeans were
of Polynesian decent and had been there
at least five hundred years. The Maori
were (and still are) fierce warriors with
a distinct culture and an even more distinct
battle cry. Since that time the natives
(which now only comprise 20% of the gene
pool) have been assimilated into the Commonwealth.
Today New Zealand is an independent country,
having broken away from its mother country.

An
interesting fact about New Zealand is
that its waters are not only some of the
deepest in the world, but they are also
the breeding grounds for one of the largest
and most elusive species of squid known
to science. The “Giant Squid”
can measure over 40 feet long and has
the largest eye or any creature on earth.
Despite its size a Giant Squid has never
been seen alive, as it is a most elusive
and canny animal. Attempts have been made
to breed one in captivity but all attempts
have failed.
