Often
called by their ancient name “Holland”,
the name Netherlands means “low
countries”. Located in northwest
Europe the Netherlands gets its name for
its sunken geography, its canals, and
the fact that it has always been in jeopardy
of disappearing under a wall of water.
Most people from North America know the
Netherlands as a place with windmills,
wooden shoes, and tulips. In fact the
Netherlands is home to an advanced and
well educated people with a unique lifestyle
and a excellent grasp on art and design.
Popular culture sees the Netherlands in
an even different light. People from the
Netherlands (who are referred to as “Dutch”…
no, not like the donut) have always had
a liberal attitude tolerating life’s
little social vices. When you see a busload
of drunken American students barrelling
out of Paris towards the Netherlands it’s
not because they want to visit the dykes
(or perhaps they do and merely misread
the pamphlet). Many things that are swept
under the rug in other countries across
the world are out in the open in the Netherlands.

For
instance their capital city, which goes
by the name “Amsterdam”, was
once known for its fantastic bridges and
architecture. Now Amsterdam is known for
well-fed American kids trying desperately
to score one last time before their plane
leaves.
The Netherlands has a long history, which
could easily take many pages to explain
properly. The country has seen more than
its fair share of war, including being
invaded by the Nazis in the Second World
War. The country was won back but at a
huge cost to everyone involved, most especially
those invaded. Today the scars of war
can still be seen, and it would do well
for those tipsy teens to take a look at
the local war graves. After all, many
names are North American.
