Most
people from North America known Monte
Carlo from James Bond movies. Mr. Bond
walks into a casino full of really rich
people wearing huge jewellery, sits down
at a table where the main villain’s
female “side kick” is sitting,
and plays some game of chance where he
wins some staggering amount of money.
It is true that the name Monte Carlo has
become synonymous with gambling, but that
is not what the country is all about.
One of the curious things about Monte
Carlo is that it is so small. Located
in the country of France, Monte Carlo
is officially called a “City State”
and is located in Monaco, the second smallest
country in the world. Located very close
to the border with Italy, Monaco is less
than two square kilometres in area! That
means that the whole country is smaller
than many world-class cities. Of course
Monte Carlo is that largest city (and
capital) of Monaco.

Monaco
also has one of the world’s last
Monarchies, with a Prince sitting as head
of state. The Prince of Monaco lives close
to Monte Carlo, mostly because it would
be impossible to be in Monaco and not
to live close to Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo
also hosts a Formula One race called the
Monaco Grand Prix, where cars race the
length of the country. This takes only
a few seconds, due to the fact that the
country is so small.
