The
southernmost country on the North American
continent, most people know Mexico as
“the place where tacos come from.”
While this is true, Mexico is also a place
with lots of history and a well-developed
culture. It is known as the “gateway
to Latin America”, and is an excellent
place to start on a trip though the Latin
American area. It shares its southern
borders with Guatemala and Belize, and
its borders contain a wide variety of
geographic features.
While it is true that some parts of Mexico
are not for the standard “holiday
tourist”, for those that actually
want to see the world beyond the compound’s
fence Mexico is an excellent start. While
some parts of the world are generally
off limits, Mexico is by no means a war
torn nation. While countries like Sierra
Leone require extreme caution and perhaps
a cadre of armed guards, Mexico has many
welcoming people that live in peace around
many interesting and important monuments.
Indeed,
Mexico contains many excellent and ancient
ruins, belonging to Maya and Aztec peoples.
While its true that these can be in very
remote locations, to the seasoned traveler
who is willing to swap risk for reward
this can be the most rewarding experience
of a lifetime. Many of the Mesoamerican
peoples existed and grew for thousands
of years, developed sophisticated cultures,
and colonized wide areas before the cultures
of the west crawled form their cradles.
One world of caution though… planning
is required, so it would be a good idea
to do one’s research before one
leaves.
