Located
in northwest Africa, Mauritania is a little
known country at odds with the non-Islamic
world. Like many an African country, Mauritania
is a former colony of the French and has
recently gained its independence. It also
joins another African fraternity, the
assembled nations who have had their peoples
try to overthrow the government in a coup.
This particular coup was by Islamic extremists
who were not happy with how their leaders
were making peace overtures with Israel.
Mauritania’s neighbours are Western
Sahara, Senegal, and the Atlantic Ocean.
It was given the Islamic Faith by the
migrating Arabic-African peoples that
continued to move south and push away
any who resisted. The Berber peoples,
whose language is still spoken today up
and down the western continent, fought
with the Arabs for centuries. The French
did not arrive until the 19th century,
at which point they changed things in
the way that white, European colonial
powers usually do.

Mauritania
is a hot, dry, dusty place covered by
sand or dust storms. The desert claims
more and more of the country every year.
Mauritania main natural industry is mining,
with its usual exports being things like
iron ore, gypsum, copper, and raw phosphate.
