These
tiny islands are located in the middle
of nowhere: smack dab in the middle of
the Indian Ocean, just a few hundred miles
south of India, are a small chain of atolls
barely rising out of the sea. The Maldives
are a very attractive place to visit,
with about 26 natural atolls in all to
explore. No one is really sure how or
who settled the Maldives first, but few
governments wanted to keep them for long
because they are so small and so out of
the way.
Each of the Atolls has a chief, and the
president of the islands appoints this
chief. Of course with a population of
300 thousand spread out over the entire
area it is a wonder there is anyone around
to know that you are the chief. 81 thousand
of these people are located in the capitol
city of Male, and the city takes up the
entirety of the island it is situated
on.

The
Maldives hold the record for being the
flattest country in the world, with the
highest “peak” being about
2.3 metres high. Like many small island
nations tourism is the reason for their
continued existence, but it also created
a situation where there is very little
“natural resources” left to
speak of. Also, as the world’s oceans
rise because of global warming it is quite
likely that the Maldives will cease to
exist.
