Kenya
is a country on the mid-west coast of
Africa. It has a population of about 31
million. Europeans arrived in Kenya in
the 1880s, and ten years later it became
one of Britain’s colonies. It would
stay that way until the 1950s when things
began to boil over and the British, who
were already looking for a way to “de-colonize”
Kenya, began to feel a lot of heat. Elections
began to take place and by the 1960s Kenya
was independent. The trouble was not over
as old tribal loyalties and political
woes plunged the country back into the
world’s attention more than once.

Kenya
is known across the world as home to some
of the worlds last remaining unspoiled
African wildernesses. Kenya has many Nature
Reserves that hold many of the world’s
endangered species. If it wasn’t
for the support of the Kenyan people and
their government these species would have
been eradicated long ago. This is not
an easy situation because much of Kenya
is needed for growing food, and when humans
compete with animals for food and shelter
humans always win in the long run. While
it is really hard to explain to people
who are starving to death why endangered
animals should be preserved, people in
Europe and North American have gotten
really good at explaining how conservation
works for everyone in the long run.
