To most people Ireland is dark beer and
four leaf clovers. Beyond these pop-culture
symbols is a country with an ancient past
and a proud heritage. Ireland is an island
located just north of the island of Great
Britain. Politically it has two parts,
the Republic of Ireland in the south and
Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is
part of the United Kingdom, which also
contains England and Scotland. Ireland
is a somewhat rocky and mountainous landmass,
with a series of rivers and valleys filled
with beautiful vistas. In fact Ireland
is so green it has become known as the
“Emerald Isle”.
Many people know Ireland as a place containing
terrorists. This is unfortunate because
the Irish, while they are the victims
of ugly international stereotypes, are
a hearty and welcoming people. Ireland
has been in two pieces since 1920, when
once half rebelled against English rule.
Since then a state of muted warfare has
existed, with a lot of bad blood lasting
generation upon generation.

People
have been living in/on Ireland for around
9000 years. Not much is known about how
the peoples of ancient Ireland lived before
the Romans arrived, and after the Christians
took over what they termed “pagan”
faiths any real evidence was either left
to rot or destroyed. What did survive
comes from the culture and folklore of
the Irish people themselves, and they
are very proud of every piece of legend
that exists. Ireland has given birth to
many poetic, literary, and musical talents,
form George Bernard Shaw to today’s
U2.
