Cuba
is a very large island that helps form
the border of the Gulf of Mexico. Located
just north of Jamaica, Cuba is officially
called “The Republic of Cuba”.
Ruled by Fidel Castro, it has been a communist
country ever since a revolution lead Castro
to power in 1959. Cuba was the center
of the “Cuban Missile Crisis”
in 1962 when the USSR and the United States
had a face off that nearly lead to Global
Thermonuclear War and the destruction
of the human race. People who were alive
in the 1950s still remember waiting for
Armageddon like people today wait for
a taxi to arrive.
Cuba is a country of contrast. On one
side is the grinding poverty caused by
the tender ministrations of American foreign
policy and on the side is the stubborn
individualism and isolationism that has
been the habit the nation’s current
ruler. Tourism is one of Cuba’s
major industries but at the same time
Cuba shuns the free market economies that
feed such tourism.

With
the collapse of the USSR in 1990 Cuba
has been on its own as far as allies and
trading partners are concerned. At one
point it accepted the U.S. dollar as legal
tender, only to revoke that policy nine
years later.
Cuba is a beautiful country caught in
the grip of poverty. Small islands of
paradise exist in heavily fortified “vacation
resorts” that cater to the wealthy.
The real Cuba that the tourists never
see causes Cubans to emigrate to places
like Miami in large numbers. Still, if
one day Castro should die or his empire
should crumble then perhaps things will
change. But considering the fate of most
South American nations currently trying
to work their way out of debt to the so
called “first world”…
maybe not.
