Brazil is the largest country in South
America, both in terms of population and
physical size. It is a lush and fertile
country rich in natural resources. Brazil
has large rain forests for which it has
become famous, as well as breathtaking
waterfalls and majestic mountains. Of
course it also famous for which the speed
at which these resources are being harvested
and consumed, and the Brazil of the future
might not be as wealthy as the Brazil
of today.
Brazil has been inhabited for at least
6000 years, but of course none of those
peoples were of European decent. Discovered
by Portuguese explorers in 1500, it was
ruthlessly resettled over a period of
300 years. Brazil was not alone in this
fate, as almost all of the “New
World” was exploited by imperialists
from across the Atlantic. Brazil quickly
became an ideal place to harvest base
elements such as gold and to grow cash
crops like sugarcane. Most of the work
was done by slaves, and the native “pagan”
religions were all but erased from history.

Brazil,
now heavily populated by Portuguese decedents,
declared its independence in 1822 and
became a republic in 1889. Immigration
increased and the country began to swell.
Brazilian democracy was replaced by dictatorship,
with power being wrestled away from the
military only to have the military seize
power again a few years later. This and
other factors caused Brazil to accumulate
a huge national debt, preventing much-needed
investment and economic growth. But the
growth of this country shouldn’t
be underestimated, and with time it is
expected that its situation should return
to normal if its luck holds.
