Once
property of Britain, the island of Bermuda
is a tiny flyspeck of land that seems
to threaten to drift off into the limitless
Atlantic Ocean. Now a popular destination
for wealthy US, Canadian, and British
tourists, it was once an important military
base during World War Two. Tourism is
everything to Bermuda, as it no longer
houses the U.S. military bases that added
to its population. One can be sure that
those stationed on the island miss it
too, for the name Bermuda has become synonymous
with the type of easy living that only
paradise can bring.
Both Britain and the United States have
left Bermuda alone to be independent.
Having an area of only 58 square kilometres
one can wonder how such a place can stay
independent, but they manage quite well.
With so little space one can easily imagine
that over 95% of the island is used up,
with few wild areas left to speak about.

Most
people on Bermuda are of mixed European
and African decent. Because it is a former
British colony Bermuda observes many British
customs, including a love of the game
of Cricket. They also observe a conservative
lifestyle: for example, while in the U.S.
or Britain the shorts called “Bermuda
shorts” are considered casual dress,
in Bermuda they are often worn with a
jacket and tie. Also being polite is quite
important in Bermuda, so even though you
are on vacation it is a good idea to be
polite.
