A
nation of complex institutions and political
history, the Kingdom of Belgium is a small
country surrounded by its larger neighbours.
Attached to countries like France and
Germany, it has seen its fair share of
wars over Europe’s long and turbulent
past. Considered one of Europe's true
melting pots, it has had contact with
Celtic, Roman, Germanic, French, Dutch,
Spanish, and Austrian peoples (and their
empires).
Starting out as a collection of Celtic
tribes, to be invaded by the Roman Empire.
As the Romans left the Franks took over,
and then came Christendom. Charlemagne
would take a swing at ruling Belgium.
Belgium would become a Kingdom, and would
be ruled under feudal law for hundreds
of years. It would have its own revolution
in 1830, and would eventually take up
arms along side the British to defeat
the Spanish.

In
the 20th Century Belgium would be invaded
twice, once for each world war. In the
First World War the country would witness
the horror of the trenches, and in the
Second World War it would suffer though
Nazi occupation. Belgium was one of the
nations that suffered the most under Nazi
rule, and many of its historic bridges
were destroyed in the fighting.
Today Belgium is a modern country, integrated
into the European Union. It still has
two strongly divided communities, those
who speak French and those who speak Flemish.
The capitol city of Brussels, and the
city serves as the center of what has
become a highly industrialized nation.
Belgium is famous for its chocolate, its
beer, and its love of French Fries served
with Mayonnaise.
