The
Nation of Algeria is on the Mediterranean
Sea, with its southern borders stretching
deep into northern Africa. Officially
named the “People’s Democratic
Republic of Algeria”, the majority
of its people speak Arabic with another
section speaking an ancient language known
as Berber.
Inhabited by humans since the Neolithic
Age, Algeria has been invaded many times
by many different peoples. Algeria has
been “colonized” by Carthaginians,
Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. Many
in the west do not know that Algeria is
strongly Islamic. This change occurred
during the early sixteenth century when
the Ottomans ruled the country, and like
many places in the world the Islamic Ottomans
changed the lands that they ruled so that
they were Islamic.

As
the Ottoman Empire fell into decline after
300 years of rule, they were replaced
by yet another set of invaders. The French
Imperialists took Algeria as one of their
colonies (along with placed like Indochina,
which would eventually be re-named Vietnam)
in 1830. Algeria would remain a French
Colony until the 1940s when massacres
on the part of the ruling French powers
would earn the eternal hatred of the Algerian
people. Algerians endured 132 years of
colonial subjugation, and while it may
be true that the country saw some development
they will never forget the treatment at
the hands of Europeans.
By the 1960s Algeria was at war to gain
its independence from France, and when
the dust cleared the Algerian military
and its ruling members were securely in
charge. By the 1990s Algeria experienced
a second civil war, this time Islamic
Fundamentalist Groups against the military.
To this day Algeria joins a long list
of semi-stable but highly devout countries
that are currently struggling for national
stability.
