One
of the hottest tourist destinations on
the planet, Waikiki is an area filled
with hotels, bars, nightclubs, and anything
else a mainland tourist could desire.
Waikiki is located in a city known as
Honolulu, which is on the Island of Hawaii,
which is the biggest island in a chain
that forms the state of Hawaii. The name
“Waikiki” means “fetched
water” in the native language. A
long time ago springs fed swampy wetlands
that once separated Waikiki from the interior
of the island.
In Waikiki there is a place called “Waikiki
Beach”, which is the shoreline fronting
the Waikiki area. It is one of the best
known beaches in the world, especially
for things like surfing. In recent years
the beach has disappeared as sand has
been swept out to sea due to lack of plant
life. At one time everyone thought it
was because tourists were taking the sand
home, but instead it was discovered that
the beach was losing sand along many sections
because of “groynes” (they
are sort of like giant sand baskets) built
out from the shore. People have been trying
to “grow back’ the beach,
which has continued for many years and
has had mixed results.
