One
of the largest and most attractive areas
in the world, Sydney is the largest city
in Australia. Residing in the state of
New South Wales, it has a population of
about 4 million people. Sydney is a global
tourist destination, with the sunny weather
and excellent beaches attracting travelers
from all over the globe.
Sydney was founded in the year 1788, but
non-Europeans have been living there a
whole lot longer. Aboriginal tribes have
been making Sydney their home for at least
40,000 years. Australia was once a British
colony; Sydney was destined to become
a population center when Captain James
Cook sighted “Botany Bay”
in 1770. It took a while for people to
find the perfect spot, but the general
area has been squirming with people ever
since. When Port Jackson was founded in
1822 it was ordered that prisoners (Australia
was being used as a penal colony) would
be put to work building the settlement.
By 1847 the settlement was up and running,
with convicts accounting for only 3.2
per cent of the population.

As
people began to arrive by the boatload
and with the onset of industrialisation
Sydney expanded rapidly. Today Sydney
is a very modern city, and recently Sydney
significantly raised its global profile
by hosting the 2000 Summer Olympics. It
is also known for its trademark “shell
shaped” opera house, which has come
to define the silhouette of the city.
