If
the state of Missouri was the “Gateway
To The West” then the city named
St. Louis is the “Gateway City”.
People who wanted to settle the Wild West
went through Missouri to get there, many
using St. Louis as a temporary base of
operation before launching themselves
into the wilderness. Reaching well over
2.5 million people St. Louis is now a
fully modern city with many interesting
attractions to visit.
Because of its name “Gateway City”,
St. Louis made their own fantastic symbol
that stands out as one of the most spectacular
monuments in North America. The Gateway
Arch was finished in 1965 and is a 590
foot (180 metre) catenary arch constructed
on the banks of the Mississippi River.
It’s massive silver form can be
easily recognised, and it defiantly worth
seeing at least once. One can ride up
the side of the arch in a specially constructed
Tram Car, which goes up to a special observation
deck. There you get an excellent view
of the city.

Also
in St. Louis is the Jefferson National
Expansion Memorial, which was constructed
near the start of the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. It celebrates and commemorates
the Louisiana Purchase and settlement
of the American West. While some see it
as a celebration of “Pax Americana”,
it remains a serious tourist spot and
an important part of St. Louis history.
