Located
at the very southern tip of the state
of Florida, Miami has been described as
a city that is “solid gold”.
With a hot beach climate Miami is a popular
tourist destination and a serious party
town. In fact most of the people that
live in Florida live in or near Miami,
and it’s by far the state’s
true population center. This is partly
due to high amounts of immigration from
places like Cuba.
In the 1950s a man named Batista controlled
Havana, and people from all over America
went to Florida to get a slice of the
pie. Many of these people were involved
with the Mafia, and they made Havana an
original den of sin. After Cuba changed
to communism after Fidel Castro took over
100 thousand people moved from Cuba to
Florida every year, most settling in Miami.
The Mariel Boatlift brought 150 thousand
Cubans to Miami in a single flotilla,
the largest ever in civilian history.

Soon
after Miami got its reputation as the
largest stopping point for cocaine from
Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru. It soon earned
the name Vice City (yes, like the video
game), and was partly responsible for
starting the infamous yet flaccid “War
On Drugs”. It also spawned shows
like “Miami Vice”, which worked
to further enforce the stereotype and
went on to inflict “big hair”
on people across the nation.
