Maui
is the second largest island in the “Island
State” of Hawaii. The largest Island
in Hawaii is O’ahu, and contains
most of the people in Hawaii. That makes
Maui a sort of a rural place, but it is
far from uninhabited. Maui was originally
used to grow sugarcane (for things like
rum and molasses) and to grow pineapples.
Maui was also in important place to hunt
whales, since whales made up so much of
the 19th century’s economy. Whales
were used to make everything from lamp
oil to perfume, and Maui was a bit like
the frontier towns of the west coast.

Today
Maui is quickly becoming the “Florida
of the Pacific”. People from the
larger islands of O’ahu and from
the mainland are choosing Maui as a quite
place to retire. This would be fine except
for the fact that Maui is a small island
and it can’t sustain too many people.
This means that every resource on the
island is strained, and while the plants
might not be having too much of a problem
humans defiantly are; clean drinking water
and sewage are slowly becoming a real
issue, and the prices of many of the necessities
of life are going up due to having to
import everything from the mainland.
