Martha’s
Vineyard is an island in the Atlantic
Ocean located right off the coast of Massachusetts,
by a finger of land known as Cape Cod.
The island isn’t very big, about
30 kilometres by 15 kilometres, and there
isn’t a very large permanent population.
Martha’s Vineyard grows during the
summer, when people who want to escape
the oppressive summer heat of the mainland
migrate to the island. At one time it
was a quiet place where the average traveler
could escape for a few weeks, but today
it is known as a bastion of American “old
money”. It is also the haven of
movie stars, television celebrities, politicians,
and much of what mainland America calls
“silent white money”.

One
might think that Martha’s Vineyard
would be very urbanized and chic with
all of this wealth, but it has been forced
in a state of being “intentionally
rustic” so that stars can walk out
on their patios in their boxers and feel
at home. Never the less there is some
serious action at Martha’s Vineyard,
including John J. Kennedy’s Jr.
crashing his plane, Senator Edward Kennedy
getting in his infamous car crash, and
where people like the Clinton’s
go to let their hair down (or let someone
else’s hair down, as the case may
be).
One more interesting fact about Martha’s
Vineyard is that one of the first havens
for the deaf was located on Martha’s
Vineyard. Because of this there is a special
dialect of sing language known as “Martha’s
Vineyard Sign Language” that was
developed right on the island.
